What is the definition of a Hispanic-Serving Institution?

Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) are defined in Title V of the Higher Education Act as not-for-profit institutions of higher learning with a full-time equivalent (FTE) undergraduate student enrollment that is at least 25 percent Hispanic.

CASA will implement the three primary components (see below) to increase the number of Latinx/Hispanic students who:

  • Enroll at Butte College
  • Persist at Butte College from fall-to-fall
  • Complete transfer-level math and English
  • Complete the requirements for a certificate or degree
  • Transfer to a four-year university

The three primary CASA components are as follows:

Component One: Increase the enrollment and financial literacy preparation for Latinx/Hispanic students.

Component Two: Completion and retention strategies to increase course success and progression in transfer-level math and English, and to improve the time to completion for degree/certificate and transfer.

Component Three: Professional development and sustainability to improve cultural pedagogy and course alignment to Guided Pathways and increase the college’s resource development capacity to strengthen fiscal stability.

CASA will provide clearly structured and intrusive student advising, financial literacy training and a robust professional development plan to help underrepresented students obtain the skills and knowledge necessary as they progress through to a certificate or an associate degree and transfer.

Examples of the no-cost services and activities provided to students include but are not limited to:

  • Academic Advising/Assistance with Course Selection
  • Tutoring Services
  • Culturally Relevant Workshops
  • College Tours and Transfer Assistance
  • CASA Support Center
  • Financial Literacy/Scholarship Assistance
  • Family Engagement Activities
  • Peer Mentoring
  • Career Advising and Job-Seeking Assistance
  • FAFSA/Financial Aid Assistance

CASA serves current Butte College students. Our grant is designed to prioritize Latinx/Hispanic students.
